Dorell Humphrey never set out to be a public figure. But when his sister Tiffany James was shot and killed on Halloween night in 2015, with her two young daughters standing right there, he became the family’s voice. When the case aired on Oxygen’s Snapped in 2023, millions watched him sit on camera and describe what the justice system handed his family. His words were blunt. His grief was real. And the story he told was one the courts had failed to stop.

Who Is Dorell Humphrey?

Dorell Humphrey is the brother of Tiffany James, a 35-year-old Florida mother killed on Halloween night 2015 in Brandon, a suburb east of Tampa. He is not a public figure by profession. Before the murder, he had no public presence at all. His name came to wider attention after he appeared in Season 32, Episode 24 of Snapped on Oxygen, where he spoke on camera about his sister, the years of threats that preceded her death, and his family’s reaction to a plea deal that left them without answers.

As spokesperson for the James family throughout the investigation and the Snapped episode, Humphrey provided context no police report or court document could. He described Tiffany as a devoted mother. He explained the relationship history between her and Darryl Williams. And he said plainly what many viewers were thinking about the outcome of the case.

What Happened on Halloween Night, 2015

On the night of October 31, 2015, Tiffany James and her seven-year-old twin daughters, Diamond and Da’Niyah, were walking back toward their apartment at 1807 Chapel Tree Circle in Brandon after trick-or-treating. At approximately 11 p.m., a figure in a full Jason Voorhees costume approached James at her front door, said nothing, and shot her twice before fleeing on foot. A neighbor called 911 after hearing the shots and seeing the costumed figure standing over a woman on the ground with a shotgun aimed at her face.

When that same neighbor opened her door moments later, she found the twins standing there, still in their Halloween costumes, covered in blood. One of the girls could not speak. The other was shaking. Detectives later said both children had blood on their costumes, in their hair, and on their faces. James was rushed to Tampa General Hospital, where she died of her injuries.

“He shot my sister in the face with a shotgun. Watched her on the ground. The girls were right there with her. Coward is too good of a word.”— Dorell Humphrey, on Snapped, Oxygen Network, Season 32 Episode 24

How Williams Was Caught

In the immediate aftermath, investigators had vague descriptions and no security footage. Williams was named a person of interest the following day but refused to speak with detectives. The break in the case came from an unexpected source: his own girlfriend.

She came forward and told police she had driven Williams to the apartment complex that night and waited with him until James arrived home after 11 p.m. She told officers she heard James scream, saw the two arguing, and then heard gunfire. Her account gave investigators what they needed. Williams was taken into custody at his workplace, the Mosaic phosphate plant in Riverview, and charged with first-degree murder with a firearm. He was booked into the Hillsborough County Jail without bond.

Key voices in the investigation

Williams’ girlfriend told police she drove him to the apartment and waited while he ambushed James. Her account led directly to his arrest.

Williams’ own daughter told detectives: “I know what my father is capable of.” She described him as violent and said he had once pointed a gun at her own mother’s face.

An inmate informant later told investigators that Williams confessed the motive: “if he can’t have her, nobody else will.”

Dorell Humphrey, James’ brother, served as the family’s primary spokesperson and later gave on-camera testimony for Snapped.

Years of Threats the Courts Did Not Stop

The murder did not come without warning. According to the Tampa Bay Times and details covered on Snapped, James and Williams spent roughly seven years in and out of court. Both filed for protective orders against each other at various points. Every request was denied.

In a 2011 filing, James stated she feared meeting Williams alone and asked for supervised custody exchanges for their daughters. She accused him of verbally abusing her sons from a previous relationship. In a separate petition, she said Williams had threatened the lives of her entire family, telling her they “would have to prepare for a funeral.” Williams filed his own petition in 2015 claiming James’ relatives were harassing him. A judge dismissed it for lack of evidence.

In the months before the murder, investigators found evidence of escalating harassment, including reports that Williams had targeted James at her job at Ultimate Medical Academy. Someone also disabled the gas tank of her car. Just one day before the killing, a family court gave James custody of the twins and ordered Williams to pay child support. Forensic psychologist Allison Tarbox, interviewed on Snapped, told producers that custody rulings are a well-documented trigger for escalation in controlling relationships.

Years of court filings: 7 protective orders were sought by both parties, but every petition was denied. Williams later accepted a plea deal and received a 20-year sentence, with a scheduled release in 2035.

What the Plea Deal Meant for the Family

Williams was originally charged with first-degree murder. He never went to trial. Instead, he took a plea agreement that resulted in a 20-year prison sentence. Humphrey addressed this outcome directly on Snapped, saying the family was disappointed but understood the reasoning. Putting the twin daughters on the witness stand, forcing them to relive what they saw on Halloween night, was not something the family was willing to do for the sake of a harsher sentence.

  • Williams pleaded guilty and avoided trial
  • The daughters, who witnessed the murder at age seven, did not have to testify
  • An inmate informant told investigators Williams gave a motive in prison: jealousy and control
  • Williams is scheduled for release from a Florida state facility in 2035
  • He has never publicly explained why he killed James

Dorell Humphrey’s Words on Camera

Humphrey gave three recorded statements on Snapped that stood out for their clarity. Speaking about the relationship between James and Williams, he told producers the couple had already split by the time James reconnected with an old friend in 2015, a development that appeared to intensify Williams’ behavior. Discussing Williams directly, Humphrey said he believed Williams had lost control and viewed the killing of James as a final act of possession over someone he could no longer keep. When addressing the plea deal, he acknowledged the family’s frustration while stopping short of openly condemning the agreement.

His account filled in details that police records alone could not: what Tiffany was like as a person, what the family had been through over the years, and what it actually felt like to watch the man who killed his sister walk away with a 20-year deal.

Dorell Humphrey remains a private individual. There is no verified public social media presence, no professional profile, and no reported activity since the Snapped episode aired. His role in this story is exactly what it was from the beginning: a brother who stepped forward when his family needed a voice, and who told the truth about what happened to Tiffany James.
