Reality television made her a household name, but the biggest recent news about Moniece Slaughter has nothing to do with a script or a storyline. It centers on her son finishing middle school.

A Singer and Songwriter Before the Cameras Arrived

Moniece was born on March 4, 1987, in Los Angeles, and she grew up in a home built around music. Her stepfather, Dave Thomas, sings with the gospel group Take 6, and that connection helped guide her early moves into a music career. Not long after high school, it led to her biggest songwriting credit. She recorded the theme song for America’s Next Top Model, and she still collects royalties from it today.

Her writing credits also include songs for Akon and Marques Houston. In 2018, she put out her own independent album, The Naked Truth, a project she wrote and released on her own.

Her Years on Love and Hip Hop Hollywood

Slaughter joined the original cast of Love and Hip Hop Hollywood, where much of her storyline followed her effort to raise her son, Kamron, with his father and fellow cast member, Lil Fizz. Their coparenting disagreements were followed closely by fans for years. She also appeared on episodes of Love and Hip Hop Atlanta and Love and Hip Hop New York, and her relationship with cast mate Rich Dollaz was a recurring subject on the show as well.

By 2018, Slaughter asked to be released from her contract, citing the mental strain the show was putting on her. That request was turned down, and she stayed on through the sixth and final season before wrapping her run in 2019.

Her Son’s Graduation Made Her a Proud Mom Online

Earlier this year, Kamron, the son she shares with Lil Fizz, graduated eighth grade with honors. Slaughter posted about it on social media, calling him her “sonshine” and sharing exactly what he had earned. According to her posts, Kamron picked up:

  • A Noble Crest award
  • A Noble Athlete award
  • Academic honors at graduation

Fizz shared his own message to his son around the same time, marking the end of middle school and the start of high school. The two coparented under public scrutiny for years on their show, and both showed up publicly for their son’s milestone this year.

Writing Openly About Her Mental Health

In February 2023, Beverly Hills Publishing released Slaughter’s memoir, Mayhem, A Mental Health Memoir. The book covers her time on reality television, her relationships, and what it was like raising a child in public while dealing with depression and anxiety.

In an interview on the podcast Shirley’s Temple, later published through Sheen Magazine, Slaughter said she wrote the book hoping it could help even one reader make better choices for their own wellbeing. She has also said she considers herself among the first Black women on reality television to speak openly about mental health while the cameras were still rolling.

She has been direct about the writing process too, describing depression after she left the show and the difficulty of finishing the manuscript largely on her own after her original plan for a ghostwriter did not work out.

Where She Stands Now

Slaughter continues to write and perform music, and she remains active on Instagram, where close to 2 million people follow updates on her son, her music, and her book. Her past relationships and legal disputes drew plenty of attention over the years, but her posts now center mostly on her family and her creative work.

Her memoir remains available through Beverly Hills Publishing, and her son’s graduation this year gave her another public moment to celebrate outside of the show that first made Moniece Slaughter known to audiences.
